Series: Thomas Nazario "Global Poverty: What Everyone Needs To Know."

I have noticed recently that is has become increasingly impossible to get through any given day without hearing about five to ten woes that the world is presently facing. It's either a new conflict somewhere in the world, a disaster related to climate change, an economy that seems to be faltering, another country working on a nuclear device, an asteroid that's headed our way, or a new disease that never seems to want to go away. I think because of this, it has become increasingly easy for us to tune out much of what we might consider noise, simply keep our heads down, and just try to get through our day. There is, however, a cost to that. For if everyone decided to never get involved with issues outside of their own, the world would never be able to overcome any of the challenges it is or soon will be facing. Also, when we tune out, it becomes far too easy to forget, or even not care about, those around us who simply need some help. The talk I plan to give is largely about the forgotten people of the world. Often they are those who live in abject poverty, often they are women and children, and often they have absolutely no access to any kind of real power or influence. One in six people in the world live on less than a dollar a day and one in three earn only two dollars a day. You can find them almost everywhere. Unfortunately, we are all too often reluctant to look and even less willing to attempt to tackle one of the biggest problems facing the world today -- global poverty. Are there reasons for this? Are they morally acceptable? On April 15th, I will talk about what I've discovered over the years in both my travels and in writing my book, "Living on a Dollar a Day: The Lives and Faces of the World's Poor." Maybe together we can begin to bring about a change in the lives of so many around the world who have so little. I look forward to our time together.
