In the early hours of November 16, 1989, US-trained commandos of the Salvadoran armed forces entered the campus of the Universidad Centroamericana (UCA) and brutally murdered six Jesuits, together with two women who were sleeping in a parlor attached to their residence.
Like many others, the UCA martyrs were killed for how they expressed their faith in love.  They sought to unmask the lies that justified the status quo, characterized by extreme economic inequalities, political exclusion, and systemic violations of fundamental human rights.  Naturally, this threatened the powerful, who opposed change, and the military, who were responsible for so many atrocities.
As a Jesuit Institution, we come together as a community every year on this anniversary in remembrance of the Jesuit Martyrs. Following Mass there will be a procession up to the Martín-Baró memorial on Lone Mountain.
