India through its Cinema

Speaker:  Professor Vamsee Juluri, USF Dept of Media Studies

Presented by the USF Center for Asia Pacific Studies

Cosponsored by the USF Media Studies Department

To audiences across the world, “Bollywood” means light-hearted movies about weddings with more songs and dances than one can count. But what cinema means to modern India is of far greater significance. From the idealistic era of Mahatma Gandhi to the present, India’s movies have provided a voice to an incredibly diverse, complex, and sometimes contentious nation. In this talk based on his critically acclaimed new book, Professor Vamsee Juluri spells out the close connections between cinema, modernity and democracy in the country as it embarks now into a new era of aspiration and super-power dreams under the leadership of its new Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
