The Seagull is a tragicomedy about love, loss, and the cost of fame. On a country estate outside of Moscow at the turn of the 20th century, a famous aging actress Arkadina takes a holiday with her equally famous novelist lover Trigorin, where they intersect with two aspiring young artists, angst-ridden playwright Konstantin and budding actress Nina.  The artistic and romantic conflicts that ensue ultimately leave everyone radically revealed and tragically transformed.  An ensemble piece inhabited by rich and complex characters, The Seagull explores its subjects with subtlety and a compassionate eye, producing an effect that is both heartbreaking and undeniably human.

The opening of the Moscow Art Theatre’s production of The Seagull in 1898 is an event that forever changed our notions of acting and drama. It established playwright Anton Chekhov as a powerful innovator of dramatic style and structure and director, Constantin Stanislavski as a preeminent theatrical voice, one who would eventually alter everything we know about acting and actor training. USF’s Performing Arts and Social Justice Program is proud to present this modern classic in a spare and vital production that will invigorate the play for a contemporary audience.
