Building from the Intersections of Race, Class & Gender/Sexuality in Academia

RSVP by March 12 »

Wednesdays, March 26 - April 30 | 5:00 - 7:30 p.m.

Faculty/Staff Lounge, UC 222

You are invited to sign-up for the spring 2014 cohort of And Still We Rise, a discussion series to be held for six weeks over dinners at the University of San Francisco. The focus begins from the stories of women faculty and women faculty of color within an often-contradictory culture of academia. The series uses the landmark edited volume Presumed Incompetent: The Intersections of Race and Class for Women in Academia as the basis and guide for meaningful dialogue and discussion for change. We hope that through the methodology and process of this discussion series, participants will have an opportunity to gather together for a person-centered and self-affirming dialogue.

This is a free discussion series, a light dinner will be served at each session. Space is limited to 18 participants, and adjunct faculty women are also encouraged to apply. Attendees will receive a copy of the book Presumed Incompetent.

Application Deadline: Wednesday, March 12, 2014

Sessions are all on Wednesday, 5:00-7:30 pm

  • March 26: General Campus Climate
  • April 2: Faculty/Student Relationships
  • April 9: Networks of Allies
  • April 16: Social Class in Academia
  • April 23: Tenure and Promotion
  • April 30: Strategies & Continued Support

This program is part of an institutional initiative developed through the USF Office of Diversity Engagement and Community Outreach. The program furthers its commitments to enriching university and community engagement; promoting inclusive dialogue, experience, and appreciation; and ensuring a thriving campus community through collective learning, campus unity, and institutional strength.
